What should you have ready when you call?

Trunk diameter and species determine whether you need a permit under Bylaw No. 3135. The cutoff is 30 cm for standard trees, or 20 cm for Douglas fir, western red cedar, grand fir and big leaf maple. If you know roughly how thick the trunk is at chest height, that gets you a straight answer fast. It also helps to tell us how the tree is behaving: has the lean changed recently, is bark missing, have you noticed fungal growth or cracked limbs. Those are the signs that separate a hazard removal from routine work.

On confirmed hazard trees, the City waives its $50 permit fee, though a refundable replacement-tree security remains due. We handle the permit paperwork for you when requested. We ask if your tree stands near a service line, as we call BC Hydro before cutting nearby. We also ask whether you want us to haul away wood debris or leave it as firewood and mulch.

Between late March and mid-August, we check for active nests before we start any pruning or removal — it's the law, not a courtesy, so mentioning a known nest when you call helps us plan the visit. If your property has a tight drop zone or falls within a Development Permit Area, we evaluate it in person rather than guessing over the phone.
