No tree protection bylaw, with two exceptions

You don't need a tree removal permit on private property in North Cowichan — the municipality has no tree protection bylaw. Two exceptions still apply: Development Permit Area 3 (Natural Environment) and DPA 4 (Hazard Lands), which cover specific parcels. That's a real difference from Duncan next door, where Bylaw No. 3135 applies from 20 centimetres of trunk diameter.

What still applies even without a blanket tree bylaw?

A Development Permit Area over natural or hazard-prone terrain can still restrict removal on an affected parcel, so we check for that before we assume a job is unrestricted.

Our ISA Certified Arborists assess your tree for five clear hazard signs: a sudden lean, peeling bark, fungal growth, cracked limbs and lifted soil. That check tells us whether removal is warranted, bylaw or no bylaw, and it's also how we decide when pruning to the ANSI A300 standard is enough to keep the tree.

Federal and provincial law protect active bird nests everywhere in the region, no matter which municipality you're in. The nesting window runs late March through mid-August, and we check for nests before we cut in that period.

Before we cut anywhere near an overhead or buried service line, we call BC Hydro so the crew knows exactly where those lines run — that's a safety step, not a permit one. Once the tree is down, the rounds, brush and chips leave with us on the same visit, or we leave them on-site as firewood or mulch if you'd rather keep them.

A rural or forested parcel here often carries more canopy per lot than a typical in-town yard. That changes how far a rigged section has to travel to a clear drop point, and equipment access matters as much to the quote as the tree's own diameter.
