What to expect when you remove a tree on a lakefront property

Trunk diameter and species decide whether a permit is needed. Municipal tree bylaws use trunk diameter to trigger permits, setting the 20 cm cutoff for Douglas fir, western red cedar, grand fir and big leaf maple. We measure and identify on-site instead of guessing from a description over the phone.

We check your tree for five signs of decay or failure: a changed lean, loose bark, mushroom-like growth on the trunk, cracked limbs and lifted roots. Between late March and mid-August we also check for active nests before we cut, since disturbing one is against both federal and provincial law.

Before we cut near an overhead or buried service line, we call BC Hydro so the crew knows exactly where those lines run before the first cut goes in. Once the tree is down, we haul away rounds, brush and chips, or we can leave them on-site for firewood if tight lakefront access makes that easier for you.

When a tree sits between your house, the bank and the water, we lower it in rigged sections so every piece stays under total control on steep ground. When a municipal permit applies and a tree is a confirmed hazard, the permit fee is waived while replacement-tree security remains due. Where pruning solves the issue, we prune to ANSI A300 standards. Every crew member follows WorkSafeBC standards, and we give a flat-rate written price before anything is booked, with drop zone and bank access confirmed in person.
