What happens during a hazard assessment on a rural lot?

We check five things on-site: has the lean changed recently, has bark gone missing or come loose, are fungal conks growing from the trunk or root flare, is any limb cracked or hanging, and does the ground at the base show root heave. On a larger acreage lot with several mature trees, that means we walk the whole property instead of judging from the driveway.

Where a tree needs to come down but has no clear fall path — boxed in by a barn, a fence line or a neighbouring tree stand — we rig it and lower it in sections instead of dropping it whole. Where the tree is sound enough to keep, we prune it to the ANSI A300 standard instead of taking it down.

Before we cut near an overhead or buried service line, we call BC Hydro, since a rural property doesn't always have those lines clearly marked. We haul off rounds, brush and wood chips when the job is done, or we can leave them on your property as firewood or mulch if you have space.

If a stream or watercourse runs through your lot, we check riparian root protection rules before starting work on trees near the bank. A confirmed hazard still gets its permit fee waived, with a refundable replacement-tree security still due. Between late March and mid-August we check for active nests before we cut, since disturbing one is against both federal and provincial law. Every job follows WorkSafeBC standards and comes with a flat-rate written price before anything is booked.

On open acreage, we prune trees to ANSI A300 standards using crown thinning and raising to reduce wind pressure on exposed canopies without taking the tree down.
