Pruning & Crown Thinning in Duncan

Duncan Tree Removal prunes trees to the ANSI A300 standard across Duncan, North Cowichan and the Cowichan Valley. Our ISA Certified Arborists plan every cut to keep your trees healthy and safe. Crown thinning and crown raising cut wind resistance and storm risk on a tree that doesn't need to come down at all.

We charge $200 to $900 per tree for professional pruning, depending on the tree's height, canopy density and overall work required.

Crown thinning, crown raising and reduction

Through crown thinning, we remove selected branches so wind passes through the canopy rather than pushing against it, lowering storm damage risk. We use crown raising to remove lower limbs that block driveways, fences or roofs. For oversized canopies, we perform crown reduction without topping, as we never top trees.

Why pruning can avoid a Bylaw No. 3135 removal permit

Under Duncan's Tree Protection Bylaw No. 3135, thresholds are 20 cm for Douglas fir, western red cedar, grand fir and big leaf maple, or 30 cm for other species. We can often prune branches back from your home to avoid a full removal and permit altogether. Our ISA Certified Arborists assess whether pruning solves the problem before we even discuss removal.

Nesting season timing

The BC Wildlife Act and the federal Migratory Bird Convention Act make it illegal to disturb an active bird nest, and the regional nesting window runs from late March through mid-August. We check your tree for active nests before pruning during that window and can schedule non-urgent work outside it.

When does a prune turn into a removal decision?

We recommend removal over pruning if we find five severe hazard signs: shifting lean, loose bark, fungal growth, cracked limbs or lifted roots. On a sound tree, none of those are present, and thinning or raising the crown solves the problem without touching the trunk.

On a large or awkwardly placed tree, even pruning can call for rigging to lower heavy limbs under control rather than letting them drop, and we call BC Hydro first whenever the work is near an overhead or buried service line. Whatever comes off the tree — limbs, brush, chips — leaves with us on the same visit unless you'd rather we leave it for firewood or mulch.

Local conditions

Douglas fir, western red cedar, grand fir and big leaf maple are common mature trees here, and Bylaw No. 3135 names all four at the 20 cm threshold. We evaluate pruning first before filing for a removal permit. We prune Garry oak and arbutus trees conservatively because they grow slowly and need gentle care to protect their natural shape and health.

People also ask

What's the difference between crown thinning and topping?
